Join us at The Book Bird – Geelong’s only independent bookshop – for an epic Love Your Bookshop Day celebration!

From 2pm – 4pm on Saturday 8 October, local jazz band Hot Club Swing will serenade us with their incredible music, and we shall have bubbles and nibbles for those who wish to partake.

We will also be running a mega ‘win the window’ competition thanks to our generous publisher friends. Anyone who spends over $50 on LYBD will go in the running to win EVERYTHING displayed on the street-side of our shop window. Wow!

New favourite gift-y, keepsake-y book for those who loved the heart-warming goodness of ‘The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and the Horse,’ and want something similar but distinct…

‘The Oxherd Boy’ is by Taiwanese American artist Regina Linke, who specialises in contemporary Chinese gongbi painting, an ancient form of brush painting that depicts narrative subjects in colourful high detail.

In this exquisite collection of illustrated parables, a young boy, his family ox, and a rabbit living in his garden help each other navigate the daily work of love, compassion and community. Their conversations are guided by the three pillars of Chinese philosophy: Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism. The pages are simple, tender and gentle, containing deep and timely wisdom for living life well.

Thank you so much to Imbi Neeme for coming down to Geelong for a special library talk at our local branch, Geelong West Library.

We spent a lovely cosy hour (on a rainy night) talking about misophonia, 90s nostalgia, the magic of postcards, performance art and experimental theatre, the utility of spreadsheets when writing fiction, her writing journey, and heaps more.

Imbi’s novels are ‘Kind of, Sort of, Maybe… but probably not’ and ‘The Spill,’ and we now have signed copies in store. 🖊️

Our next @geelonglibraries event will be next month with best-selling author Bruce Pascoe, and we cannot wait. This event will be held in the main Geelong Library & Heritage centre space in town. Tickets now selling via the link in our bio.

Charlotte recently devoured this book, which provides a fresh take on a classic police procedural. We know, basically from the outset, the broad strokes of what has happened to Nina, so the novel focuses instead on the ramifications for both families involved and the way in which the case plays out in the broader community, especially online. It’s fast paced and brilliantly written. Highly recommend!

Our first event collaboration with the @storymakersinstitute podcast was a blast!

We had a very full house at @_the_ko_ last night to hear Bri Lee discuss her debut novel ‘The Work’ with broadcaster and podcast host Joel Carnegie, who expertly guided us through a conversation about art-making, industry vs integrity, relationships in the 21st century, hustle culture, and so much more. You’ll be able to listen back to this conversation in a few weeks time, so if you missed it, jump over to @storymakersinstitute Substack and subscribe. We had such a great time bringing this night into being and can’t wait for the next one.

The kids section is positively jumping this school holidays! We’ve had the best time this past week chatting with little readers about their armchair adventures. There’s plenty of new delights to explore, but Sarah would like to especially recommend Katrina Nannestad’s latest novel for readers 9+ — ‘Silver Linings.’

Silver linings is set in the 1960s and follows Nettie and her three big sisters on their farm. Much is stirring in Nettie’s life—the Queen is coming, they’re expecting a new baby brother—until everything goes terribly wrong. Another incredible gift from this Australian author, for lovers of ‘Little Women.’
