We are delighted to announce that The Book Bird has reopened for browsing and is now open until 5pm, Tuesday to Saturday. That is a whole extra hour of perusing time!

It’s not quite business-as-usual in the shop just yet, however. There are some rules in place to keep our staff and customers happy and healthy. We have a limit of five (5) customers at any one time in order to make social distancing possible, so please be mindful of numbers as you enter our space.

We also ask you keep browsing to a maximum of fifteen minutes. We know how much you’ve missed ambling along the shelves selecting books to flip through at a leisurely pace. We know that browsing in a bookshop is one of life’s greatest pleasures. However, to keep the traffic flowing and minimise contact between readers and staff, we ask, for now, that you cap your time in the shop to a quarter of an hour.

You will notice as you enter the nest that there is a hand sanitising station. You must sanitise your hands before touching the books. We appreciate that a lot of shops are requesting people sanitise upon entry and that it can get tiresome, but it means that we can remain confident in the cleanliness of our wares.

Small people. We adore small people, but sometimes it’s like they have three times as many hands touching everything at once! With so many colours and textures and words waiting to be devoured, we can fully appreciate the temptation to pick up as many books as possible. Because of this, we ask parents of little humans to please keep a close eye on those busy paws. Ordinarily we would have toys available for use, however in the interest of promoting swift, no-touchy-touchy visits, we have stashed them away for the time being.

So! Those are our rules of engagement. We are beyond excited to welcome you back and to chat about books in locations other than the doorway. We honestly had no idea how many different places there are to stand, even in our small space. It certainly helps being able to discuss children’s literature in the children’s section, for instance… Who would have thought?
